The specialized unit of Assam police has turned itself into a potent ‘strike force’ within two years, after remaining rather dormant from 2008 when it was first created.

Led by senior IPS officer Parth Sarathi Mahanta, the Assam STF has recently unearthed Bangladesh-based groups, Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), which is an affiliate of Al-Queda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS), sleeper cell modules that were activated recently for suspected terror strike in eastern India.

The STF’s success rate has dramatically improved, with 254 successful operations in 2023-2024, compared to only 111 between October 2008 and February 2023. Arrests have more than quadrupled in the recent period to 482.

Speaking to media persons, Special DGP of Assam Police Harmeet Singh said that under the direct supervision of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, we reinstated STF led by DGP GP Singh with IG Partha Sarathi Mahanta heading it. STF’s job is to look after the safety of the state’s people and look after larger aspects of crime at both international and national levels.
