The 30-year-old Bangladeshi national, arrested Sunday on charges of attacking Saif Ali Khan after breaking into his house, today told the police that he had stabbed the actor in the back multiple times attempting to break free from tight clutches so as to escape.
The police said the accused, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, even hid in the garden of the building that houses Mr Khan’s flat at upscale Bandra for about two hours before escaping from the place.
Mr Khan, who had grievous injuries in the attack that took place in the wee hours of Thursday, was admitted to emergency surgery at Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital.
Doctors said that they took out a 2.5-inch piece of the broken knife during the surgery lodged in his spine. Had it pierced 2 mm deeper, it would have caused a grievous injury, they said.
