Bangladeshi unrest sparks exodus of Indian students

The situation worsens in Bangladesh, and more than 300 Indian students have returned home through the different border points in the northeastern region on Friday only. The ongoing demonstrations following the re-introduction of reservation in Government jobs have taken the ugly tangent of violence, and more than 100 people have been killed.

The demonstrations that have been running for not less than three weeks hit a dangerous level yesterday when the participants of DHAKA University used violence. Seven people were killed the following day, and the government had to call for the shutdown of universities in the entire country.

Educomp posted on its website that many returning students were doing MBBS and were from states like Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Meghalaya, Jammu, and Kashmir. It was noticed that the students returned through the key routes, namely the international land ports of Akhurah near Agartala in the state of Tripura and Dawki in Meghalaya.

The students pointed towards a further deterioration of the situation in Bangladesh with internet facilities almost completely down and telephone lines seriously affected as the principal factors that have prompted them to abandon Bangladesh to danger temporarily. ”The situation is worsening, and many restrictions have been implemented here. That is why we have returned,” said Aamir, a second-year student.

With the conditions still escalating in Bangladesh, the best and safer option for the Indian students is to go back to India, thus raising the level of the crisis and underlining the need to find a peaceful solution to the current conflict.
