BJP consults NDA allies for Lok Sabha speaker’s post

The BJP, which is at the helm of affairs in the Indian central parliamentary house as the leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), is considering with its partners the filing for the post of the presiding officer of the Lok Sabha, the Indian lower chamber of the parliament.

The NDA goes to the polls under the leadership of its principal member, BJP, and senior leaders from the party have talked to almost all the allies, including some of the small parties of the NDA.

Information sourcing shows that although the allies have promised support to the BJP-nominated candidate, most of the support has not been in the form of name nominees. The BJP has communicated to the meeting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has been silent on the nominee, will be the final word on the choice for the entire NDA.

The BJP is also ready for the Deputy speaker post or any other post in the house, but the post may go to an ally of the BJP, while the opposition will also be expected to bid for the post as they will command the numbers. Some of the allies have demanded a consensus candidate with increased aggression by the Speaker this term, though the Speaker is so important.

The special Parliament session will convene on June 24, but the Speaker election will only occur on June 26. However, the Lok Sabha Speaker today is Om Birla. To give context, before the actual day of the election, a Protem Speaker shall preside for three days only.

According to government sources, the NDA will likely usher the consensus principle across parties in the Speaker’s election. This minister has been named Rajnath Singh, who will lead India’s efforts to advance these goals in the defense area. Earlier in the week, Kiren Rijiju, the minister for Parliamentary Affairs, had a briefing session with Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of the opposition.

Thus PM Modi is predicting the candidature of NDA on June 26, endorsed by Rajnath Singh. The opposite camp may also create a candidate, forcing any options to be voted on. Otherwise, the selection of the Speaker will be through a physical exercise by putting the hand on the head.
