In the aftermath of the devastating landslides that occurred in Wayanad, Kerala, asking the center to categorize the event as a ‘national disaster’ TOP BJP Party leader V Muraleedharan’ has dispelled this by saying that such is not possible under the Central government.
Finally, Mr. Muraleedharan, a former Union Minister, quoted a Parliament document dated 2013, in which then Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran admitted that there was no provision to declare a natural disaster a national disaster with the help of the Assembly, the Council, or both.
Muraleedharan fired warning shots, pointing out that ‘national disaster’ is not a classification under the central government rules, an observation that stretches back to the UPA government.
When asked if there is a ‘National Disaster’ organization, the BJP leader asserted that while there is no ‘national disaster’ label, there is a way each disaster type is dealt with depending on its magnitude.
”Please, I do not want to see people trying to manufacture non-existent issues during this disaster period,” he said, ensuring the central government would fully support the state governments.
Muraleedharan made these remarks in the wake of the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, ’s visit to Wayanad and his description of the landslides as ‘’a national disaster’.
Rahul Gandhi elaborated on the need for a higher-grade response given the scale of the calamity, which he referred to as the worst tragedy the state has ever witnessed.
Even though the situation was not characterized as a ‘national disaster,’ the central government has committed to providing assistance to the Keralite government regarding the consequences of the disastrous Landslide incidents in Wayanad.
