A 10-year-old boy, who was rescued from a borewell in Madhya Pradesh’s Guna district after an exhaustive operation that lasted for over 16 hours, has died. The rescue operation had taken place on Saturday evening in the Janjali area of Raghogarh.
The boy was identified as Sumit and fell into the borewell around 3:30 PM. By the time he was retrieved at approximately 9:30 AM the next day, he was trapped at a depth of around 39 feet. Rescue operations began soon after the incident was reported; rescue teams from SDRF, NDRF, and local police put in an untiring effort at the spot.
ASP Gunna, Man Singh Thakur provided details of the operation, “Sumit fell into the borewell yesterday afternoon at around 3:30 PM. The rescue operation began at around 6 pm yesterday, and he was brought finally today morning.”
Teams had dug a parallel pit reaching almost 40 feet to facilitate the rescue, and continuous oxygen support was provided to ensure the child’s safety. A medical team was also present at the site to assist.
This incident comes in the wake of a string of similar tragedies in the past few weeks. Only days before, a three-year-old girl fell into a 700-foot-deep borewell in Kotputli, Rajasthan, where specialized teams have still not completed rescue operations. More recently, a five-year-old boy drowned in the middle of the Dausa district in a borewell; after a 55-hour rescue operation, the boy never came out alive.
These incidents reflect the continuing hazards of uncovered borewells and the need to raise the safety level for children in rural areas.
