Brutal murder in Jaunpur linked to long-standing land dispute

The brutal murder, in connection with the two-decade-old land dispute, took place on Wednesday in Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district. The killing has sent shivers down the spines of all in the community. According to sources, a group of men hacked 17-year-old Anurag to death by beheading him with a sword. The grief-stricken mother sat with her son’s severed head in her lap for several hours, an unbearable sight that has captured public attention.

The violent clash, police officials said, resulted from a decades-old row over land in Kabiruddin village that falls under Gaurabadshahpur police station. The skirmish turned ugly after Anurag was chased by a group of attackers, one of them carrying a sword; the assault was so severe that it had decapitated the teenager’s head from his torso.

Two persons who were linked to the attack were arrested by the authorities, but the prime attacker is still at large. Police contingents were sent to the village to keep the overall situation under control and not let the violence spread further.

Superintendent of Police Ajay Pal Sharma said, “The dispute over the land is going on for 40 to 45 years.” Two of the accused, Ramesh and Laalta, belonged to the mob that assaulted Anurag, he added. Sharma said, “I, along with the district magistrate, am at the spot. We are probing the case and interrogating the ones in remand.”.

Meanwhile, the District Magistrate of Jaunpur, Dinesh Chandra, assured that the culprits would be booked under the most stringent sections. He also stated that the land dispute is pending in a civil court and has asked for a report about the unrest within three days.
