Rescue efforts are underway after a multi-storey building collapsed in Sohana village of Punjab’s Mohali district on Saturday. According to officials, many people are feared to be trapped under the rubble.
District administration has mounted a major rescue operation and pressed into service two excavators to assist the rescue efforts. A team of NDRF has reached the spot and fire brigade personnel are also trying to rescue people.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann tweeted on social media platform X: “Received a sad news regarding collapse of a multistorey building near Sohana in Sahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar (Mohali). I have deployed the whole administration and other rescue teams on the spot.
Keeping full control, I am in continuous touch with the administration.” He hoped no life is lost and the government would take action against whosoever responsible while he sought cooperation from people over this issue.
Senior Superintendent of Police, Deepak Pareek, who was at the spot, said that the rescue work was going on briskly. “So far, there is no information about anybody being stuck in the debris. The rescuing teams are toiling hard. Lights are put up for the convenience of the rescue operation.”.
Locals claimed that a booming sound was heard when the building collapsed. Preliminary investigations reveal that the building collapsed after excavation work was done in the nearby area.
Local leaders, including MP from Anandpur Sahib Malvinder Singh Kang and Mohali MLA Kulwant Singh, also reached to oversee the rescue operation. Singh said, “It is an unfortunate incident. The rescue operation is in full swing.”
