Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the decision to form the 8th Pay Commission was taken in a meeting of the Cabinet, which was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The chairman and two members of the Commission will be appointed soon. The minister added that consultations with central and state governments and other stakeholders will also be held.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the government’s decision to constitute the eighth pay commission will boost consumption and improve the quality of life.
“We are all proud of the efforts of all government employees working to build a Viksit Bharat. The Cabinet’s decision on the 8th Pay Commission will improve quality of life and boost consumption,” he wrote on X.
The central government sets up a pay commission once every ten years to revise the salary structure of employees. Except for altering the salary structure, each pay commission has its term of reference (ToR), which broadly outlines its focus. The pay commissions also make decisions regarding pension payments.
