The government has approved two new Delhi Metro corridors.
Union Minister Anurag Thakur recently announced Cabinet clearance for two new Metro rail lines in Delhi-NCR. On March 13, the Minister reported that projects linking Lajpat Nagar to Saket and Inderlok to Indraprastha have received a green signal.
The combined length of the two proposed corridors under Phase IV of the Delhi Metro expansion is approximately 20 km. The 8.4 km Lajpat Nagar-Saket G Block route will have eight stations, while the 12.4 km Inderlok-Indraprastha stretch is scheduled for completion by March 2029.
The estimated cost for developing these two lines is Rs. 8,399 crore. The approval comes days before anticipated dates for Lok Sabha polls, which is a move likely aimed at garnering voter support.
On the same day, clearances were also granted for cooperation pacts with neighboring countries. An MoU with Bhutan facilitates India’s supply of petroleum and related products.
An Inter-Governmental Framework Agreement was given the nod to deepen India-UAE collaboration in ports and maritime sectors. It explores the potential for joint investments under the India-Middle East Europe Economic Corridor initiative.
An energy efficiency MoU between New Delhi and Thimphu promises to help Bhutan through programs like Appliance Star Labelling and building code reforms. It envisions the capacity creation of green professionals.
Once completed, the new Delhi Metro lines are set to provide substantial public transport connectivity and boost regional development.
