Calcutta medical college trainee doctors reject tainted principal appointment

This is in defiance of the state government’s decision as trainee doctors at the Calcutta National Medical College rejected Dr Sandip Ghosh as their new principal. This measure has been taken following the recent rape and murder of a doctor while on duty, which has led to fierce protests all over the country.

Earlier this week, Dr. Ghosh, the head of RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, quit due to social media humiliation. But he was very soon promoted to the position of principal of the Calcutta National Medical College, which provoked the students’ anger.

Yesterday night, when the governmental order to allow him to work came out, the students of the Calcutta National Medical College openly declared they would not allow Dr. Ghosh to assume command. The demonstrators chanted ‘go back’ at the officials and demonstrated their vigorous rejection, saying that they don’t want RG Kar Medical College ‘garbage’ on their campus during its inspection.

Even the Calcutta High Court questioned the government decision stating that ‘No man is above the law.’ The court further questioned why Dr Ghosh, after having resigned, was given another responsibility to handle.

The state government, however, in view of the student protests and the court’s observations, has requested Dr. Ajay Kumar Ray to continue as the principal of the concerned college, which at least gives some relief to the trainee doctors who are most anxious.
