Can’t Wait for another rape”: SC on need for real ground changes

Led by CJI DY Chandrachud, the bench also shook its nickel and dime at the West Bengal government and the authorities at the hospital for not filing the FIR on time.
New Delhi:

In the court today, listening to the Kolkata rape-murder case, the apex court observed that the nation cannot wait for another rape for change on the ground. The DY Chandrachud-led bench also displayed considerable concern at the West Bengal government and the authorities of the hospital regarding the delay in filing the FIR and other deficiencies committed in the case management.

Violence has become a norm that befalls medical professions. Women doctors, for example, are vulnerable because of patriarchal prejudices.

As more women are taking up employment to support their families, the country cannot wait for another rape to see reforms on the ground, as noted by CJI Chandrachud.

Worrying questions that were brought up by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud at the hearing are the reckless actions of the hospital’s administration and the local police.

”Why FIR was registered three hours after the body was handed over to them for cremation,” the Supreme Court bench wanted to know.

‘What Was the Principal Doing?’

The judiciary appeared to regain its self-generated initiative and on its own launched an inquiry into one of the most heinous criminal acts—the brutal rape and subsequent murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on August 9.

It has led to the massive protests all over the country, and also the issues related to the safety of women, especially in medical colleges, have come into the limelight.

The sitting consists of a three-judge bench of the CJI Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala, and Justice Manoj Misra.
