CBI arrests former medical college principal in rape-murder case

The CBI made major raids on Saturday as it arrested two key persons, Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, and police officer Abhijit Mondal. Both are accused of interfering with the probe into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in the state-run facility last month.

A trainee doctor who was to appear for his examination was found dead in the hostel on August 9. It took the police more than 12 hours to lodge an FIR, which can be done in an unnatural death case, which has raised an eyebrow before the Supreme Court for a considerable delay where Ghosh, who has been arrested for financial irregularities by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), is accused of. A difficulty has been raised over the possibility of the destruction of evidence.

Officer-in-Charge of Tala police station Mondal is also being investigated; as per sources, two more Kolkata police officials are being investigated. It is to be mentioned that Mondal has been interrogated several times by the CBI and caught in a flip-flop.

The RG Kar incident has led to massive protest movements, a reassessment of Bengal’s health care system, and the threat of a cover-up. Junior doctors’ strike: Centre urges Mamata Banerjee to open negotiations Political rivals and leaders of the BJP have demanded that Vineet Goyal, the commissioner of Kolkata Police, be suspended, while the BJP leaders have also asked for the resignation of Mamata Banerjee, the home minister.
