The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has framed charges against Sanjoy Roy, a former contractual staff with the Kolkata Police, in connection with the rape and murder of an on-duty woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The investigating agency will submit its charge sheet to a special court in Sealdah this afternoon.
According to the police, the alleged rape had taken place when the doctor was sleeping in the seminar room of the hospital in a break. Chargesheet names Roy as the principal accused and statements of around 200 witnesses have been incorporated into the document. Police are yet to confirm whether there were more suspects than what have been identified so far and whether the incident was a case of gang rape.
The doctor’s body was detected on August 9, and investigations since then pointed to the traumatic circumstances of her death. Following the public outcry, the court had asked the CBI to take over the investigation.
Roy, who was an acquaintance at the hospital, was arrested by Kolkata Police the day after the detection of the victim’s body. Later, he was handed over to the CBI along with relevant evidence.
In a related development, Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the college, has been arrested by both the Enforcement Directorate and the CBI for unrelated cases regarding financial anomalies anthe d destruction of evidence.
For two months now, the colleagues of the victim have been protesting; now, their agitation has reached the extent of a hunger strike for justice in the RG Kar case and security measures for medical professionals.
