CBI concludes no gangrape in Kolkata Doctor’s death case

The investigating officer of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the Kolkata doctor’s death case that happened last month says there is no basis for the human rights body for the gang rape allegations. Sources said only Sanjay Roy, now in police custody, is thought to be involved in the appalling rapists and murder which took place at RG Kar Hospital. The investigation is said to be nearing conclusion, and the individuals listed above will soon be charged.

The case handed over to the CBI by the Kolkata High Court has directed a lot of pressure on the agency, especially at the time of hue and cry raised by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other political parties. This has become clear through Banerjee’s recent outbursts over social media over the slow pace of work, saying that justice delayed is justice denied. Another of her colleagues, state Minister Brataya Basu, said the same thing and urged that the CBI produce a detailed report.

CBI officials said that they have to date undertaken over 100 interviews and ten lie detector tests, two of which involved the arrested ex-chief of the hospital, Dr Sandip Ghosh about alleged embezzlement of funds. His arrest came after preventable misconduct allegations after his employment, including in biomedical traffic waste and selling of unclaimed corpses.

As the investigation continues, the CBI has forwarded a medical report with DNA samples to the experts at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences Delhi. The agency is likely to file a report in the Calcutta High Court on September 17 about the developments in the case.

The consequent case got ugly and instigated protests while civil society, gender activists, and political parties like BJP and Congress reacted. Speculations and conspiracies over the death of the doctor have now ensued, and her family accuses the police of offering to them a bribe for them to suppress some elements of the case, which the police strongly refute.

A lot of ethnic uproar has erupted regarding the issue, and it has been demonstrated publicly that protests can be violent, especially on Independence Day when an identity group attacked the seminar room where the doctor’s dead body was found. As the finality of the CBI investigation draws nearer, so does the need for justice, which continues to stand as a common cause for many citizens in Kolkata and other parts of the country.
