CBI custody for ex-medical college principal in doctor’s death

A court at Kolkata has directed RG Kar Medical College and Hospital former principal Sandip Ghosh and police officer Abhijit Mondal to be detained in CBI remand till September 17 in connection with the rape-murder of a trainee doctor on August 9.

Ghosh and Mondal, who were CBI agents, were arrested on Saturday for allegedly preventing the FIR registration and altering the evidence. Ghosh had previously been arrested for issues related to embezzlement.

“We have their custody till September 17 for three days. We have interrogated them together to learn about their involvement in the RG Kar case, as they are considered important,”

said a CBI officer.

Other charges against Ghosh include evidence tampering, as the Calcutta High Court placed him on leave after he resigned from his position. This is similar to Mondal’s case; moreover, he has been charged with the delay in registering the FIR and misinterpreting related evidence.

The CBI said that there might be a ‘bigger conspiracy’, thus hinting that both accused were in touch with each other and Ghosh used to guide Mondal about the ways to run the murder case. The CBI said that Mondal came to know of the death of the doctor around 10 AM on August 9, and yet the FIR was registered only at 11 PM on the same day.

Mondal was arrested after he was either unable or unwilling to give satisfactory answers as fit for a minister to the questions posed by the CBI officers. The remains of the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor were found in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College Hospital on the 9th of August. Till now, three people have been apprehended in this case.
