CBI investigates Kolkata Doctor’s death, identifies key suspects

The CBI is deep into investigations of the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata as the agency arrests almost 30 people linked to the victim’s family.

Some of the sources we spoke to within the CBI said the agency is now searching for a bigger picture, suggesting that the incident may well have been a cover-up for other problems. Still, the previous three days were productive: the police questioned more than 30 people, and new information might appear.

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered that the CBI should take over the case from the Kolkata Police, which had earlier taken it up.

The victim’s family has alleged the involvement of some colleagues of the medical college and hospital of RG Kar. The parents briefed the CBI about their suspicion of at least a few interns and physicians for the death of their daughter and named the people that they suspected.

In response, the CBI has placed emphasis on questioning such suspects besides some of the Kolkata Police officers who first investigated the case. On Friday, a house staff member and two post-graduate trainees who served on duty the night of the alleged incident were called in for questioning, as was the former hospital principal, Sandip Ghosh.

Ghosh immediately resigned two days after the body was discovered, saying he very much feared further action might be taken against him. His lawyer has filed for anticipatory bail from the Calcutta High Court, which has asked him to file an application to seek relief from a single bench.
