Chandra Arya announces bid for Canadian prime minister

Indian-origin Member of Parliament Chandra Arya has thrown his hat into the ring to contend for the prime minister’s job in Canada which fell vacant after the resignation of Justin Trudeau. Taking to X, Arya declared, “I am excited to lead a small, more efficient government to rebuild our nation and secure prosperity for future generations.” But his announcement has been trolled mercilessly by a section of netizens who also made fun of his English and accent.

Criticism wasn’t reserved solely for her comments on Twitter as at least one, named Chris Brunet, trashed her background, too: “This dude moved to Canada at the age of FORTY THREE, speaks broken English with a thick Indian accent, and yet is somehow an MP and running to be the next Prime Minister.” Adding on a situation hypothetical in nature: “Imagine I moved to Mumbai, took an introductory course on how to speak Gujarati, then ran to replace Modi.”

During the announcement, Arya listed many of the issues facing Canada and said he has practical solutions for those. “Canada deserves leadership that isn’t afraid to make the big decisions. Decisions that rebuild our economy, restore hope, create equal opportunities for all Canadians, and secure prosperity for our children and grandchildren. Bold political decisions are not optional—they are necessary,” he said.

Who is Chandra Arya?

Chandra Arya is an Indo-Canadian politician and a member of the Liberal Party of Canada, representing the Nepean constituency in the House of Commons. First elected in 2015, he has been re-elected three times.

Arya was born in Karnataka. He once spoke in his mother tongue, Kannada, during a session in the Canadian Parliament. He shared this experience on X as, “I spoke in my mother tongue, first language, Kannada in Canadian parliament. This beautiful language has a long history and is spoken by about 50 million people. This is the first time Kannada is spoken in any parliament in the world outside of India.”
