Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh: At the joint rally of Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi and SP Chief Akhilesh Yadav in Prayagraj, UP, stampede like situation created near the stage as innumerable people tried to enter the venue.
However, the incident happened in a public meeting in the Padila area of Phulpur Parliamentary Constituency, where the two leaders were there to seek votes for the ongoing Lok Sabha election. Some eyewitnesses say it came up soon before Gandhi and Yadav were due to speak to the people, with their workers being at their best in an attempt to arrive at the stage to receive guidance from their leaders.
In the subsequent attempts of the leaders to quell the protestors the situation reached a crescendo where barricades were broken, and the crowds became irate. Reports from the event included videos that captured the commotion around the party workers as they fought for the front stages.
The duo cohabited on one side, and the crowds from the Muslim camp were annoyed with the deteriorating security situation. Nevertheless, the two leaders conversed briefly and ended up abandoning the stage with no speech delivered. The two leaders, however, were moved away before they could be exposed to any danger.
It is, however, important to note that the drama did not end there. They began their second stop at the Mungari, Karachhana area of Prayagraj, where they were met with a situation similar to what had occurred previously, with party workers getting overexcited and the crowd becoming too unruly.
Elections to the Lok Sabha phase 5 will be held tomorrow – May 20—for Rae Bareli, and Rahul Gandhi is leaving no stone unturned to make his presence felt in this constituency. The recent event in Prayagraj has raised grave concerns about the safety of party leaders during the elections, which are considered a high-risk political process.
