CJI lauds reforms in the criminal justice system.
New Delhi: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has hailed the recent reforms introduced in criminal laws as transformative for India’s criminal justice system.
Addressing a conference of legal experts in the capital, CJI Chandrachud said the new legislations mark a watershed moment as no law impacts society as directly as criminal law.
He referred to the three major laws recently passed by Parliament—the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) amendments, the Indian Penal Code (IPC) amendments, and the new Evidence Act. The CJI said these will overhaul how criminal justice is delivered.
Terming it a progressive path, the CJI noted that the laws have introduced necessary changes to protect victims’ interests better and effectively investigate and prosecute crimes.
However, he cautioned that success would depend on effective implementation, requiring sensitivity from those manning the system.
The CJI’s remarks come ahead of the new laws across India. This is expected to usher in wide-ranging reforms to modernize archaic systems and make them more people-centric.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and top country law officers—Attorney General R Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta—were also present at the conference on India’s criminal jurisprudence.
