CJI Chandrachud discusses faith, justice, and ayodhya dispute solution

CJI Chandrachud clarifies remarks on seeking divine guidance for the Ayodhya verdict.

CJI DY Chandrachud clarified his remarks made during a hometown event regarding how judges stay calm amid courtroom conflicts.

To a question on his composure, the CJI had stated how everyone has their own ‘mantra’ like exercise or meditation, and that he spends an hour daily reflecting on cases while seated before a deity as per his faith.

However, some interpreted this to mean judges now seek religious guidance for verdicts, which the CJI denied.

“I make no bones about my faith but respect all faiths. Being religious does not affect how I treat people of other faiths,” he stated.

Regarding the Ayodhya dispute, he had only told the deity of his faith to find a solution in those trois months, not that it directly impacted the ruling.

Reiterating judicial independence and impartiality, the CJI said personal faith has nothing to do with justice delivery to all sections.

As the remarks stirred debates, the clarification underscored the separation of religion and justice as the cornerstone of India’s secular Constitution.
