CJI pulls up lawyer for mistaking HC judge’s name

It’s hilarious how the lawyer simply replaced the name “Roy” with “Mukherjee” as he inadvertently invoked the name of the great filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee.

New Delhi: It was a “Gol Maal” moment for the Supreme Court today, as the lawyer referred to Justice Hrishikesh Roy as “Justice Hrishikesh Mukherjee.” It was a hilarious mix-up between the celebrated filmmaker and the judge.

The Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, quickly corrected the lawyer. He reminded the lawyer that every advocate should be aware of the names of the judges.

An advocate referred to a case that was heard by the top court earlier, saying, “This matter was before Justice Hrishikesh Mukherjee.”

The Chief Justice was quick to add, “Hrishikesh Mukherjee or Justice Hrishikesh Roy? If you make Roy into Mukherjee, then you must know your judges. This is the limit. Please go and check the website.”

Chief Justice DY Chandrachud promptly corrected the lawyer’s mistake of mentioning the judge’s name.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court saw a “Gol Maal” moment today when a lawyer referred to Justice Hrishikesh Roy as “Justice Hrishikesh Mukherjee” — a hilarious mix-up with the renowned filmmaker.

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud promptly corrected the lawyer and told him an advocate must know the names of judges.

An advocate referred to a case earlier under consideration by the top court and said, “This matter was before Justice Hrishikesh Mukherjee.”

The Chief Justice was quick to cut the lawyer short. “Hrishikesh Mukherjee or Justice Hrishikesh Roy? If you make Roy into Mukherjee, you must know your judges. This is the limit. Please go and check the website.”.

Justice Hrishikesh Roy was administered the oath as a judge of the Supreme Court in September 2019. Prior to this posting, he was the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court and a Gauhati High Court judge. He had also been a senior counsel.

It’s funny that the lawyer who replaced the “Roy” with the “Mukherjee” confused the filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee, whose slice-of-life films have stood the test of time and remain popular across generations.
