Congress files privilege complaint against PM over Anurag Thakur’s remark

In a likely to worsen the existing political tension, the Congress party has lodged a privilege motion against PM Narendra Modi for sharing a video clip/ripping off the speech of BJP leader Anurag Thakur, targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, referring to ‘objectionable remarks. ’

Punjab politician Charanjit Singh Channi, a Member of Parliament from Jalandhar and the former Chief Minister of Punjab, was offended when Thakur had to delete some comments he made about Prime Minister Hakim;

Thakur filed a complaint alleging that some of his statements were removed from the official record of the parliamentary proceedings, yet the Prime Minister tweeted the entire video of his speech.

The Congress leader pointed out that the words that have been expunged cannot be referred to in public and claimed that the PM’s sharing of the video constitutes a very serious violation of parliamentary privilege.

The disturbing row occurred during the Union Budget 2024-25 discussion when Thakur, five times MP from Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh, insulted Rahul Gandhi and, in return, received anger from the Opposition.

The Congress party has accused Thakur of launching a ‘highly abusive and unconstitutional’ rant. In contrast, the leader of the party, Jairam Ramesh said that this BJP-RSS and PM Modi act shows their shameful casteism.
