Congress MP Rakesh Rathore was arrested on Thursday in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur in connection with a rape case filed by a woman. Rathore, who represents Sitapur, was whisked away by the police when he was in the middle of a press conference at his home.
Rathore was arrested a day after the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea. Rathore is accused of sexually exploiting a woman for four years under the pretext of marrying her.
The order was passed by a single bench of Justice Rajesh Singh Chauhan after hearing the anticipatory bail plea filed by Rathore. The lawyer appearing on behalf of the petitioner told the court that the plaintiff had filed this case after four years. He said the petitioner had been falsely implicated in this case.
It discharged the plea and directed him to surrender to the sessions court within two weeks.
On January 17, Uttar Pradesh Police lodged a case against Rathore as the woman approached the police. Three days later, Congress MP’s counsels, Arvind Masdalan and Dinesh Tripathi, filed an anticipatory bail petition in Sitapur.
