Officials have confirmed that Congress MP Rakesh Rathore was arrested on Wednesday in connection with a rape case. The arrest of Rathore, who represents Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh, was made during a press conference.
The case against Rathore was registered on January 17, based on the complaint of a woman who accused that he had been sexually exploiting her for four years on the pretext of marriage and help in furthering her political career. The police received call records and audio recordings from the victim in support of the allegations.
In a related development, the husband of the victimized lady had filed another complaint last week naming five accused including Rathore and his son of putting pressure on the family to withdraw the case.
Earler on Wednesday the anticipatory bail plea of Rathore before Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court had also been rejected ordering him to surrender. Last week the MP-MLA court in Sitapur too refused him a bail on January 23.
Before joining the Congress, Rathore had contested Uttar Pradesh assembly elections both as a BJP candidate and an Independent. He has also been associated with the Bahujan Samaj Party, formerly headed by former Chief Minister Mayawati.
