Congress to decide the leader of the opposition as parliament convenes

As the renewed Lok Sabha convenes its first meeting, the Congress party is all set to take a call on its choice of the leader in the lower house of Parliament. Leaders of the opposition Indian National Congress party’s newly elected Members of Parliament for Lok Sabha are currently congregating at Congress Bhavan in Bengaluru to discuss the matter, Rahul Gandhi from Wayanad and Raebareli among them.

P. Chidambaram believes that Rahul Gandhi recently launched intensive ‘Bharat Jodo Yatras.’ Owing to these yatras, the Congress won as many as 99 seats and is expected to become the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha. Party members have pointed out how Gandhi changed the course and effectiveness of the outreach initiatives in an election.

There was a time when the Congress had only 52 seats in the 2019 general elections; however, today, it seized 9 seats. The party’s revival has made the BJP, which won the most seats to become the single-largest party in the state but failed to garner a clear majority, rather shaky. As per the data available on the election results of different political parties, the total number of seats won by the INDIA alliance, in which the Congress party participated, was 234.

In contrast, Prime Minister Narendra Modi required support from other regional parties like Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) and Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP to form the government.

“In the CWC meeting, we will review the performance of the Congress party in the 2024 elections. In the CPP meeting scheduled at 5:At 6 of the clock in the evening, the Congress party is set to elect its CPP chairperson…… For the Leader of the Congress Party in the Lok Sabha, we all feel Rahul Gandhi should be given the charge …if he agrees to this position, he will be LoP leading 234INDIA bloc MPs, said Congress leader Manickam Tagore.

The decision of who to appoint as the Leader of the Opposition is very critical because, through her, the party is in a perfect position to check the government and present the opposition’s views in Parliament.

As things stand now, the Congress has done significantly better in the 2019 general elections; the Congress is expected to come up with better and more beneficial scrutiny of the Modi government policies and their operations.
