Avinashi Pandey said that party workers and leaders would unconditionally work to ensure the victory of Samajwadi Party candidates or that of other parties of the INDIA bloc.
Congress General Secretary Avinashi Pandey confirmed on Thursday that the Congress will not field its candidates for the by-polls to nine seats in Uttar Pradesh amid a deadlock with the Samajwadi Party.
Addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi along with the Congress’ Uttar Pradesh chief Ajay Rai, Congress general secretary Avinash Pande said party workers and leaders would unconditionally work to ensure the victory of Samajwadi Party candidates or that of other INDIA bloc parties.
The Congress leader said the prevailing political circumstances were not about strengthening the organization or the party but protecting the Constitution.
“The way political and social tensions are increasing in UP and the country, and the great objectives with which the INDIA bloc was formed, on that basis, it is not about strengthening an organization or forwarding party interests but to save the Constitution and to strengthen mutual harmony,” Avinash Pande said.
It came a day after Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav announced that all candidates under the umbrella of the INDIA bloc would contest the scheduled by-elections in Uttar Pradesh on its ‘cycle’ election symbol.
But Pande clarified that the candidate and symbol would be of the Samajwadi Party or any other ally of the INDIA bloc, not the Congress.
