Surjewala accuses BJP of twisting facts after row over remarks on Hema Malini.
Congress leader Randeep Surjewala has criticized the BJP for distorting facts after a controversy erupted over his remarks targeting actor-politician Hema Malini. It all began with a video shared by the BJP’s Amit Malviya, in which Surjewala is heard addressing a public rally and making a comment on Hema Malini, the BJP MP from Mathura.
Malviya alleged the remark was “disgusting” while referring to Congress’ “hatred for women”. However, Surjewala clarified he had only said, “We respect Hema Malini ji because she is married to Dharmendra ji; she is our bahu.”
The Congress general secretary accused the saffron party of deliberately twisting facts to shift focus from the Centre’s “anti-people policies”.
Surjewala added that the BJP never questioned PM Modi over his past statements on women leaders and pointed out his intention was not to insult but to remind that public representatives must be accountable.
Hema Malini is currently campaigning in Mathura and did not comment on the row. Meanwhile, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla hit out at Congress’ “disrespect for women power”.
The development comes at a time when other Congress and BJP leaders too have faced EC rap over controversial statements during the ongoing Lok Sabha electioneering.
