Ranveer Allahbadia, better known as The BeerBiceps Guy, created a massive furore last month when he uttered a coarse comment at the roast show, India’s Got Latent. New Delhi: A balance needs to be found between freedom of expression and morality, the Supreme Court ruled today, asking the Centre to take this into account before framing guidelines for online content in the wake of the big controversy surrounding YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia’s lewd comments.
The 31-year-old YouTuber, who had been restrained from filming any show previously, has been permitted to restart his podcast, The Ranveer Show. But the court mentioned that he has to give an undertaking that his shows will have desired levels of morality so that audiences of any age group can watch them.
Ranveer Allahbadia, aka The BeerBiceps Guy, caused a massive furore last month when he made a lewd comment at the roast show, India’s Got Latent. While appearing on the show hosted by comedian Samay Raina, Allahbadia questioned a contestant, “Would you rather watch your parents have sex every day for the rest of your life or join in once and stop it forever?”
A viral clip of the comment elicited widespread outrage as social media users argued that vulgarity was being disguised as comedy on online platforms. Several police complaints were lodged against Ranveer Allahbadia, Samay Raina and others associated with the show.
During the controversy, Allahbadia apologized for what he had said and claimed “comedy is not my thing” and that “it wasn’t cool.” The 31-year-old wrote an apology note on X that read, “I shouldn’t have said what I said on India’s got latent. I’m sorry.” In the video note, he claimed, “My comment was not just inappropriate, it was not even funny. Comedy is not my thing, I am just here to say sorry.”
Mr Allahbadia confirmed he had been inundated with inquiries requesting whether he intended to utilize his position in such a manner. “Clearly this isn’t how I want to use it. I am not going to offer context or justification or reasoning behind whatever transpired. I am simply here for an apology. I did have a lapse of judgment. It wasn’t cool on my part,” he explained.
