Cyclone removal looms over Bengal, Odisha coasts

Setting the five-state IMD warning alarm bells ringing, the Meteorological Department today warned that the depression that formed over the Bay of Bengal is expected to evolve into the severe cyclonic storm ‘Remal’ by Sunday evening, May 26. This oncoming low pressure area is likely to give moderate to heavy rainfall and wind along the coastal areas of West Bengal and North Orissa.

The above analysis reveals that the latest track forecast turns the depression into a cyclonic storm over south coastal Odisha on Saturday morning, intensifying into a sheer cyclonic storm while crossing the Bangladesh—West Bengal border on Sunday evening, with wind speeds up to 102 KMPH.

Given Cyclone Remal affecting West Bengal, the coastal districts, and North Odisha, heavy rain will occur on May 26 and May 27. It has forewarned similar conditions along the coast and south of Mizoram, Tripura, and Manipur.

Fishermen have been reminded not to go out to the sea and conduct fishing operations in the Bay of Bengal until 27 May 2019 since the weather will worsen on the evening of May 24. According to scientists, global warming leads to warmer SSTs, which is why cyclonic storm intensity has increased.
