To people’s surprise, the beautiful area of Wayanad in Kerala has recently become the site of numerous deadly landslides that claimed many lives. The disaster threw a death toll of over 150 people while over 200 sustained injuries, and 180 people are still missing.

The disaster occurred on Tuesday, putting the nation in a state of mourning and worry. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that the Kerala government was warned about the possibility of a landslide a week before the actual occurrence. But the state government under Pinarayi Vijayan has been raising the bar on the lack of people’s evacuation.

Giving details about the Kerala floods, Shah said nine teams of NDRF were prepositioned in advance. He opined that the Kerala government did not evacuate people in time.

Further, he stated that India is one of the four countries that can give advance warnings on disasters up to seven days. The Union Minister opined that the number of deaths would not have been so high if the state government had paid heed to alarms.

Efforts in the field of rescue and relief are in full swing presently, with the Army, Air Force, NDRF, and SDRF in operation. The situation is being closely watched by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the central minister has committed to helping the state face the Wayanad calamity.
