Defence ministry signs ₹13,500 crore deal for 12 Su-30 fighters

The Su-30 aircraft will have an indigenous content of 62.6%, which is improved because the local defense industry will indigenize many components.

New Delhi: The Ministry of Defense on Thursday signed a ₹13,500-crore contract with the Bengaluru-based Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for 12 Sukhoi-30 fighter aircraft and associated equipment for the Indian Air Force as part of the country’s self-reliance push, said the ministry.

The IAF flies 260 Su-30s, and the deal for 12 additional fighter aircraft will be firmed up to make good for crash losses. A ₹7,000-crore contract worth 100 more self-propelled K9 Vajra-T guns being locally manufactured by Larsen & Toubro, including technology transfer from South Korea’s Hanwha Techwin company, has also been accorded approval, HT reported.

“The Su-30 aircraft will have an Indigenous content of 62.6%, enhanced due to indigenization of many components to be manufactured by the local defense industry,” the defense ministry said. The 12 aircraft will be manufactured at HAL’s Nashik division.

The ministry said in a statement that the supply of these aircraft would enhance the IAF’s operational capability and strengthen the country’s defense preparedness.
