Delhi faces severe water crisis as heatwave grips capital

The Delhi government has requested the Centre and apex court for immediate water supply as other states since the demand is rising due to extreme heat waves in the national capital.

Regarding the water supply crisis in Delhi, the Delhi government, who filed a petition to the Supreme Court, said that people in Delhi require more water due to hot weather conditions. “The water demand has doubled with the summer setting in Delhi. It is the civic responsibility of all the concerned parties to cater to the water demands of the capital city,” the plea stated.

Delhi Minister Atishi has also concisely informed this, accusing Haryana of not releasing sufficient water into the Yamuna river, from which Delhi mostly fetches its water.

“In Delhi, what has happened is that the water levels at the Wazirabad barrage have gone down because Haryana has not been releasing adequate water in Yamuna, and the situation has worsened as it is summer now almost touching 50 degrees Celsius, people have increased demand for water,”

Atishi said.

Some of the areas that are severely affected include Chanakyapuri and Geeta colony. There, thousands of residents are forced to wait in queues for a few buckets of water, as the few water tankers available try to serve a large population.

During the water scarcity, the Delhi government levied ₹2,000 for excessive water usage and created 200 teams to check this penalty.
