Justice Manmohan’s elevation comes at a time when the Supreme Court is functioning on two vacancies, and such an appointment will improve Delhi HC’s representation in the apex Court.
On Tuesday, the Union government declared Justice Manmohan, chief justice of the Delhi High Court, a judge of the Supreme Court. The appointment was notified after President Droupadi Murmu’s approval following a recommendation by the Supreme Court collegium earlier this month.
According to the news shared on application X by Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal: “In exercise of the powers conferred by the Constitution of India, the President, after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Manmohan, Chief Justice, High Court of Delhi, as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
Justice Manmohan’s promotion comes at a time when the Supreme Court is working with two vacancies, and his appointment will strengthen the Delhi High Court’s representation in the country’s highest court.
On November 28, the Supreme Court collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Sanjiv Khanna, recommended the elevation of Justice Manmohan. The five-member collegium also includes justices Bhushan R Gavai, Surya Kant, Hrishikesh Roy, and Abhay S Oka. It underlined a mix of considerations, including seniority, merit, integrity, and the need to maintain adequate representation of the Delhi High Court in the Supreme Court.
