Delhi HC puzzled by ED’s stance on Kejriwal’s bail plea

Rather amusingly, the Delhi High Court looked bewildered by the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) approach to the bail petition of Delhi’s Chief Minister, Mr Arvind Kejriwal. While the High Court was hearing a petition by the ED challenging an order that granted bail to Kejriwal by the trial court, the judge asked the following question directly and in a rather rude manner: “I am confused. What do you want to do? Are you going to arrest him again?”

Kejriwal, who is currently in Siberia after being arrested by the CBI in connection with the alleged liquor policy scam, was released in the PMLA case on June 20 by Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court. However, it will be pertinent to note that the high court stayed the above-mentioned order.

In the case of Kejriwal, the Supreme Court granted interim bail in July in the ED matter, but he has continued to be in custody due to a CBI arrest.

In particular, the ED advocate asked the High Court to defer the hearing of the petition to another Wednesday, claiming a senior official is usually not available on that day. The judge stated that Kejriwal was bailed by the Supreme Court of India; Kejriwal’s lawyer replied to the bench, saying that it was a case of sheer persecution.

The High Court has now transferred it for hearing later in the day, along with other matters pending on the list, and there is uncertainty about the ED’s next move on the matter.
