Delhi High court rejects cong’s appeal against ₹105 crore in recovery, meaning no tax relief.

In another jolt to the beleaguered Congress, the Delhi High Court dismissed its petition, challenging an I-T notice.

The party had moved the HC after the IT Appellate Tribunal refused a stay on the notice for recovery of Rs. 105 crore in outstanding taxes.

Congress had assessed its income at over Rs. 199 crore for AY 2018-19, upon which tax authorities raised a demand of over Rs. 100 crore.

In February, the I-T dept froze key Congress accounts, prompting the party to approach the tribunal, citing an inability to pay bills.

During the hearing, the I-T department said Rs. 103 cr was due initially, which rose to Rs. 105 cr with interest.

Congress’ various appeals failed as the mandatory 20% payment was not made; only Rs. 78 lakh was deposited.

With HC also refusing relief now, how the beleaguered party handles the massive tax recovery remains to be seen.

As legal and financial troubles mount, this is another jolt for the Grand Old Party, which is fighting to stay relevant.
