In a story of grit and determination, Dhruv Loya, of Indian origin, graduated with a degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University at Buffalo and landed his dream job at Tesla. It had not been easy there.
Loya launched a very aggressive job search that lasted five months. He sent over 300 applications to Tesla and took ten different interviews before landing the job. From Pune, India, Loya took to LinkedIn to celebrate his success and some of the setbacks he faced.
“I finally got the job!” he exclaimed on the platform, detailing his journey. Loya revealed that he had sent more than 500 cold emails. He went on to say how especially hard it was to balance having done three internships, keeping up a good GPA, and taking part in extracurricular activities.
“I never imagined I would find myself in a position where I would be out of work for five months, lose my lease and my health insurance, and constantly feel the ticking clock of my visa status, knowing I could be forced to leave the U.S. at any moment,” he wrote. His situation forced him to hop between friends’ apartments, sleeping on air mattresses, and save every dollar he could.
Offering advice to other job seekers, Loya first acknowledged the challenging job market, particularly for international students. “Treat applying for jobs as your 9-5, but make sure to use your evenings and weekends to unwind and do things you enjoy. I know how emotionally demanding this process is,” he cautioned.
He also listed resources that were helpful in his job search: “Hunter.io for cold emailing, LinkedIn, Indeed, Handshake, Jobright.ai for job searches, and ChatGPT+ for tailoring resumes and cover letters.” His final message was hopefulness: “Just keep manifesting, stay positive, and believe it shall fall into place!
The comments on his post have been supportive, with many users sharing similar experiences and congratulating him on his achievement. One comment read, “Congrats, Dhruv! I’m going through the same here in Australia. Thank you for the advice, and all the very best for your career.” Another shared, “Congratulations, Dhruv! Your persistent effort has paid off. Thanks for sharing and motivating us. Successful career ahead!”
