A key decision is pending on a poll complaint against the PM.
The Election Commission is set to rule on a complaint accusing PM Modi of code violations during a rally. Sources say the EC is likely to give the all-clear, having found no contravention of MCC rules prohibiting use of religious figures to appeal for votes.
The complaint was filed by a lawyer objecting to the PM’s listing government works like the Kartarpur Corridor and the evacuation of Sikhs from Afghanistan. However, EC scrutiny concluded that he was merely highlighting achievements.
Its decision remains pending in the Delhi High Court, which the complainant approached alleging inaction. Separately, the Congress, too, has lodged a complaint against PM’s remarks about minorities at another rally, over which the EC has yet to rule.
While provisions bar exacerbating differences or inciting enmity, the EC is believed to have found no evidence. Its stance could offer relief to the PM in the court where the matter is scheduled this week.
The final view assumes significance as complaints accuse the PM of code violations by using religious references in public addresses during polls.
