Elon Musk to visit India: Tesla and Starlink plans unveiled

Elon Musk, the brain behind leading brands such as Tesla, SpaceX, X, and Starlink, announced that he is going to visit India later this year. The announcement was made after he had a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday, a highly anticipated visit which was scheduled first nearly a year ago but didn’t happen.

The announcement has been made at the time of significant events since Donald Trump took office as the U.S. President. Prime Minister Modi had recently traveled to the United States, where he met with Trump and Musk separately earlier this year in February.

Earlier this year, in June 2022, Modi had also invited Musk to invest in India’s electric mobility and emerging commercial space industries. Modi reiterated this invitation during their meeting in February by highlighting opportunities in innovation, space exploration, artificial intelligence, and sustainable development.

As discussions about Tesla’s entry into the Indian market heat up, there is growing anticipation regarding Musk’s plans for a factory in Maharashtra. Alongside showrooms in Mumbai’s BKC Complex and Delhi’s Aerocity, Tesla is also gearing up to establish an extensive charging infrastructure for its electric vehicles and facilities for battery cell material manufacturing—a critical component for its vehicles and energy storage systems.

India is one of the quickest-growing electric vehicle markets, with over 1.5 million units having been sold in 2023 alone. With the government giving incentives and India having a deep pool of tech talent, India is poised to become a global base for Musk’s ventures. As tariff woes begin to fade away, maybe with an Indo-American trade deal, Tesla can be the first among Musk’s ventures to arrive on Indian shores.

There are, however, challenges that remain, particularly with the ongoing tariff problems in China, and India is a good alternative option for Musk’s ambitions.

Future of Starlink in India
In addition to Tesla, Musk’s satellite-based internet company, Starlink, is also ideally positioned for a large deployment in India. This can provide the nation with lightning-fast internet access to the masses. Only recently, Starlink executives met with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and telecom ministry officials in Delhi to discuss acquiring a license to provide satellite communication services. National security concerns, however, have been raised on the need for local command centers to manage communication services in sensitive areas.

The requirement for interception facilities has been a point of contention as well, but the Starlink-Indian government interaction is a manifestation of the company’s intent to overcome regulatory hurdles to access this emerging market. The discussions with Starlink, as per Minister Goyal, have varied from the company’s advanced technology platform to its present alliances and intended future investments in India.

SpaceX has already onboarded top Indian telecom operators like Reliance Jio and Airtel to enhance internet connectivity in India, which means the launch of Starlink in India is imminent.

Finally, the possibility of SpaceX entering the Indian space industry is an interesting subject. As India welcomed its space industry to private players, there are possibilities of collaboration, especially with SpaceX’s capability in manufacturing and launching advanced rockets and spacecraft. This collaboration can go a long way in supporting India’s ambitious space program.
