Enhanced security measures in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of key events

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi plans to visit Jammu and Kashmir and the annual Amarnath Yatra begins in the region, the Indian central government and relevant security organizations are taking adequate measures to guarantee security in the Union Territory.

This comes against the backdrop of an increase in recent terror threats and the recent attacks, which necessitates the deployment of more forces in J&K to enhance security forces. Another key political executive security review meeting with Home Minister Amit Shah in the chair to discuss the security arrangements is lined up.

While some central paramilitary forces have already been deployed, the authorities are seeking more contingents, mobilizing the forces from different places. I see it as a shift of emphasis to the Jammu region, where the forces will be provided with more fortified vehicles.

Spies have recently indicated that the militant groups are producing more threat communications on social media platforms. As a result, a senior officer has been posted to enhance input development and liaison activities with the provincial authorities.

The increase in security measures has come during times when J&K is set to host the PM’s visit, Amarnath Yatra as well as Assembly elections may be sought post the analysis of the scenario after the Yatra. Besides camp attacks, fidayeen strikes, and cold and systematic killings of civilians, authorities are monitoring other potential threats to take preventive measures.
