Ex-Union minister retracts ‘accept Pakistan’s word’ statement

Soz’s comments on “accepting Pakistan’s word” are the newest entry in a political exchange of barbs between the BJP and Congress over controversial comments following the Pahalgam attack.

The list of contentious statements made on the Pahalgam terror attack got longer as former Union Minister and Congress leader Saifuddin Soz became the latest to be targeted by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after he urged accepting Pakistan’s position during the current tensions.

While anger in the country mounts following the dastardly terror strike at Pahalgam that cost the lives of 26 tourists, inflammatory remarks by a string of Congress leaders have earned the BJP’s displeasure, accusing the grand old party of protecting terrorists and giving a clean chit to Pakistan.

Responding to India’s suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, Soz asserted that the water was extremely significant for irrigation and drinking in Pakistan and cautioned that Jammu and Kashmir could be completely inundated if the water is not diverted enough.

The Indus Water Treaty has stood the test of wars between India and Pakistan. Pakistan’s water treaty is a lifeline for it. If Pakistan insists that they have nothing to do with the attack on Pahalgam, then we must take Pakistan’s word,” he told a news agency PTI.

His words ring with that of Karnataka Minister Santosh Lad, who had too raised questions about the Centre’s intention in suspending the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan and stated, “Shouldn’t Pakistanis have water, don’t they drink water?”

Amit Malviya, in charge BJP IT Cell, condemned the former Union Minister’s statement and stated that he wanted India to overlook all the proof of Pakistan’s participation in the massacre of tourists at Pahalgam and merely believe Pakistan. “He has most certainly overdone even the expectations of the Pakistani deep state with such audacious advocacy,” he stated.
