A video showing a mosque engulfed in flames has been doing the rounds with a claim that it is in India. Claim: The video of the mosque being set on fire is from India. Fact: The claim is false. The video is from Indonesia, and the mosque caught fire due to a short circuit.
A video that purportedly depicted a mosque on fire, with claims of the religious place of Muslims having been set on fire in India, is doing the rounds on social media. A Facebook user shared the video captioned, “A mosque has been set on fire in India.!!!”. NewsMeter found the claim false as the video is of Indonesia.
Upon a reverse image search of the video’s keyframes, we found pictures of the same mosque on fire, published by a Facebook account on December 8. The Indonesian Post said a fire had erupted at the Central Market in Luwuk, Banggai, in Indonesia, on December 8, 2024. (Archive)
Another release that emerged in our study is that on December 8 of this year, an Indonesian report was published in The Tribune Palu containing images that describe the incident where flames engulfed a local mosque.
In the same report, the fire breaks off from one stall belonging to a trader, then sweeps immediately into Luwuk Central Market, where many buildings burned. Mostly, all stalls were confirmed destroyed, according to the local sources. They added hours of effort before fully eliminating the raging flames.
The Tribun Palu published a video report on December 9. It revealed the whole situation and indicated that an alleged electrical short circuit caused the fire.
