Details of the woman who was allegedly killed by suspected insurgents in Manipur’s Jiribam district on November 7 have emerged from an autopsy report containing eight wounds, broken bones, and severe burns.
As the report accessed by India Today puts it, there were burns on around 99 percent of her body. The post-mortem conducted at Silchar Medical College and Hospital in Assam noted that she had gross charring of the body with the absence of large areas like the face and limbs. The skull was noted to be duly burnt and fragmented, while charred tissues of the neck were retrieved.
Apart from the burns, there was a penetrating wound on her right thigh and a metallic nail imbedded in her left thigh. Owing to postmortem burning of the body, the autopsy could not ascertain whether the woman had been sexually assaulted or not. Chemical analyses were inconclusive as a function of the condition of the remains.
She is a mother of three, and armed insurgents attacked her village, burning to ashes several houses. Some disturbing visuals of the attack on that violent night have surfaced on social media, once again bringing into light the continuing unrest in the region.
Incidentally, the Central Reserve Police Force gunned down 11 Kuki militants in an encounter in the same district recently amidst mounting violence. The unabated violence in Manipur has killed over 200 so far, raising very serious questions of security and safety in that area.
