Haryana elections: Uncertainty over Congress-AAP alliance

As the elections in Haryana are scheduled to happen in the next month, the parties are in preparation mode. Also, people are wondering whether the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which were in alliance in the Lok Sabha elections, will continue in alliance.

Hooda, the former Chief Minister of Haryana, categorically said that there has been no talk of an alliance.

“The association we had was at the national level. We have not discussed this with them. Here, the battle is between BJP and Congress,”

he opined. Out of fifty-five seats in the previous Lok Sabha, Congress had won five in Haryana, and it was a much better position than in 2019 when all the ten seats went to BJP. In specific, AAP though did not secure and secure any seat in that election.

Rahul Gandhi was said to have sought opinions from Congress leaders on the proposed electoral adjustment with AAP in its election meeting of the Congress election committee. It has been learned that Hooda is willing to give AAP 3-4 seats out of a total of 90 assembly seats. Congress party has shortlisted about 30 names, and the list may be announced shortly.

Although the state leadership has not shown much interest in the alliance, the party’s high command is seriously considering this factor, particularly in light of the impending Delhi elections. A good show in Haryana could consolidate the anti-BJP forces in the opposition, according to

Speaking for AAP’s senior leader, Sanjay Singh, it was welcome that the discussion on this possible alliance was held, but a decision would be made after consulting Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is presently detained for money laundering. Earlier, Kejriwal had declared that AAP is all set to fight all the ninety assembly seats of Haryana independently.

In the previous general elections, Congress and AAP jointly contested the Lok Sabha elections. Congress got five assembly seats in Haryana, and AAP did not perform well. After the outcome, some of the AAP leaders in Haryana accused the Congress party of their loss. This reflects that any future talks about alliance will require delegations to develop a lot of negotiations on common ground.
