The heated debate over constitution chants in Lok Sabha inauguration

The exchanges between the two sides were highly charged when the debate was introduced at the start of the new Lok Sabha. The Speaker did not exclude himself from the dramatics by intervening in matters that were so not within his jurisdiction other than to fan the flames of controversy further.

The unrest started when Shashi Tharoor, a Congress leader in the House, said ‘Jai Hind, Jai Samvidhan’ as soon as the House Had been sworn in. Opponents of the government also cheered ‘Jai Samvidhan’.

But soon, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla quickly supported Tharoor for this and said that Tharoor was already taking oath on the Constitution. See more at Deepender Hooda from the Congress criticized the Speaker for objecting to such statements supporting the Constitution.

To this, Birla immediately retorted, “Don’t tell me what I should and should not object to; take your seat.”

The case led to a more extensive discussion with the Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra asking whether one cannot say “Jai Samvidhan” in the Parliament. She said the ruling party believed in unleashing “unparliamentary and unconstitutional slogans” while raising concern on the opposition’s pro-Constitution chants.

”The anti-Constitution attitude that we witnessed during the elections is now coming in a new avatar that intends to sap the Constitution,”

Gandhi said in a post on X.

The exchange still reveals the growing conflict between the government and the opposition, in which the latter alleged that the authority is eroding the democracy and violating the constitution.

Given that the newly constituted Lok Sabha has just begun its term, the said incidence marks the nature and tune of debates and discussions to be followed in days to come.
