Heavy rains disrupt Mumbai: Flights delayed, floods wreak havoc

Heavy rainfall continues to lash Mumbai, the financial hub of India. Various aspects of life have been affected across the city’s regions. Several flights have been affected by this weather, and as a result, many passengers are now stuck at the airport with their flights either delayed or cancelled.

The red warning was issued by IMD for the city, which said some places may get extremely heavy rain up to 8. 30 am tomorrow. Towns within Mumbai are seriously endangered if not flooded, with water levels emerging to extreme levels; some compromised areas include Sion, Chembur, and Andheri.

IndiGo, Air India, and SpiceJet are some of the many airline companies that have come forward to reveal that the excessive rain periodically affects their flight schedules and has led to many of them being cancelled. The public has been urged to confirm their flight schedules before travelling.

Thus, among the seven water sources the BMC has enumerated, two, Modak-Sagar and Vihar, are in a state of overflow. The civic body responded by cutting water supplies to Mumbai by 10%.

The problem does not only exist in Mumbai, as the neighbouring areas and other states in Maharashtra also feel the effects of the heavy rains. Mumbra area in Thane and many residential societies in Pimpri Chinchwad, Pune, are submerged; three people died due to electrocution while crossing the flooded area in Pune.

Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has assured that the administration is on high alert, saying that specific instructions have been issued to the NDRF and SDRF telling them to be on the lookout and save people wherever required. The state government has also written a letter to the Army stating that the Army’s facilities will be sought in case of need.

The Chief Minister has requested the people of Mumbai to avoid leaving their homes unless absolutely necessary. She announced that the state government is ‘watching the situation’ and is preparing to be air-spirited from the affected areas if need be.

People continue huddling indoors as the rains pour, and all that is seen is trucks and personnel, mainly from the authorities, ensuring people’s safety, delivering essentials, and trying to ensure the normal functioning of transport and infrastructure in the city.
