Mumbai is struggling through the downpour today. Earlier this week, IMD issued a ‘yellow alert’ for the city due to heavy to very heavy downpours expected in the next three days.
It has now warned that from July 12 to 14, “heavy to hefty rainfall at isolated places are very likely in Mumbai”.
Even the latest IMD has predicted that Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall will occur over Konkan, Madhya Maharashtra, and Coastal Karnataka during July 12-15, and similar conditions are expected to prevail over Goa during the next five days. Alternatively, there are forecasts of isolated weighty rains again in Gujarat on Wednesday.
Due to heavy rainfall today, local trains, buses, and flight operations have been hit by a water logging problem in Mumbai. As a precaution, schools and colleges were closed, so students did not have to go to school to get infected.
On average, a normal weather prediction for a whole day is expected to produce 100mm of rain. Accordingly, in the first six hours of the week at night between 1 am and 7 am on Monday, the Mumbai weather department recorded 300mm of rain. Due to hefty downpours, the Regional Meteorological Centre sounded a red alert for Mumbai, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Pune, and Satara, among other districts, on the same day.
The current situation where the country’s southern region is experiencing heavy rains is not isolated since there is an increasing stream of different weather occurrences in the mid-western and western parts of the country.
The IMD has forecast fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rains with thunderstorms and lightening over Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Kerala, Mahe, Lakshadweep, and Karnataka in the days to come. Moderate to intense showers will also occur in isolated to scattered manner over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Rayalaseema.
Given that more heavy showers are expected to be experienced in Mumbai and the neighboring provinces, official bodies have put their security and efficient disaster response mechanisms on standby if required.
