Teen murdered in suspected case of ‘honour killing’ in Telangana.
In a shocking incident in Telangana, a woman has been arrested for allegedly strangling her teenage daughter to death in what appears to be a case of ‘honour killing’. The deceased, identified as 17-year-old Bhargavi from Ibrahimpatnam, was found brutally assaulted by police at her residence on Monday. She reportedly had a relationship with a local boy, Sashi, against her mother’s wishes.
Eyewitnesses cited by police said the accused, Jangamma, flew into a rage upon finding the couple at home. She forcibly removed Sashi before launching an attack on Bhargavi.
The girl’s brother bore witness to the harrowing scene, desperately pleading with his mother to stop as she strangled Bhargavi with a saree. He raised an alarm, and police rescued the teen in an unconscious state.
However, doctors declared Bhargavi dead with grave internal injuries. Jangamma had opposed their union, citing caste differences and insistence on getting her cousin married off instead, proving fatal.
The incident comes amid the ongoing debate around patriarchal norms governing women’s autonomy and choice. Police say a case of murder has been registered for detailed investigation.
While the legal process follows its course, the tragedy shines a light on prevailing social challenges threatening lives in the name of family honour.
