Joining IITs is considered an achievement for many students in India. However, in a recent incident, an IITian became the center of a hot debate on social media. It started when a photograph of a car sticker reading, “You are chasing an IITian,” was posted on the Reddit group r/JEENEETards.
The picture showed an automobile stuck in traffic, with a sticker on the right side of the body that read, “You are chasing an IITian but that is ok. We are used to it.”
The post quickly went viral, with a flurry of reactions coming in. Some users deemed the sticker “cringy,” though others felt the car owner deserved to boast after having navigated one of the toughest exams in the world.
“I cringed reading this, which made me think about someone who didn’t cringe and chose to flaunt it,” commented one user. Another added, “Super cringe. Only those with low self-esteem flex like that. Even a Harvard graduate doesn’t boast; they simply say, ‘I went to a school in Boston.'”
An IIT graduate also weighed in, stating, “I genuinely have stopped telling people where I study just because of these nitwits.”
On the other hand, one supportive user said, “Of course, they cleared one of the toughest exams in the world while you sit unemployed at home on your dad’s money at 30.” Another user commented, “These people work so hard to clear IIT that they have nothing else to brag about.”
The post appeared on Reddit a few days ago and currently has more than 3,500 upvotes and over 200 comments-some even from people who have a stake in this debate.
