IMD predicts above-normal rainfall for September

According to IMD, they expect the rainfall level to be above normal for September after receiving heavy rainfall in August. The average rainfall, meanwhile, is to reach 109% of the long-period average (LPA of 168mm) in the month.

Director General of Meteorology M. Mohapatra warned that low-pressure systems could form every week, resulting in continuous rain, especially over the states in the North, including Uttrakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan. The lands in these regions might slide off at a very high rate, resulting in very high floods.

The weather office has forecasted the formation of at least two more cyclonic disturbances in the next week. One is likely to develop in the Arabian Sea and the other in the Bay of Bengal. These systems are expected to move northwest and affect North West India.

On the other hand, Rayalaseema and other parts of southern peninsular India may receive less than average rainfall, especially in southern Karnataka. As it is now, the southwest monsoon flow is 7% higher than the LPA.

Therefore, day and night temperatures are believed to remain above normal. In the near future, more rain is expected in Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, and major rainfall is expected in India’s Central and North-West regions, also because the monsoon has been very good in the past few months.
